How is our view of war mediated? And how does this mediation change the nature of war? We know that war has been experienced mediatedly for at least fifty years. We have seen that it has become more mediated with each passing decade. In this respect, it can be said that war is becoming increasingly imaginary. Thinking about the connection between war and visual technologies now means thinking about war itself. This situation makes images of war no longer representational but part of a multifaceted operation. Images have become tools for waging war.

This talk, to be given by Hasan Cem Çal, will trace the intersection between technology, politics and war through the works of Harun Farocki, who problematizes this very transformation throughout his oeuvre. The following films and video installations by Harun Farocki will be screened as part of the talk:

A Way, 2005, 14'
Serious Games 1–4 [Serious Games I–IV], 2010, 44'
Target Recognition and Tracking [War at a Distance], 2003, 58'

Although he has worked in many different fields such as editing, writing, radio, and theater, Harun Farocki is best known for his directing. His experimental documentary films and installations, which he has produced for nearly 50 years, have inspired many directors and artists on an international level. Farocki's works examine how war, capitalism, and technology intersect in many of his works, and their work remains relevant in our time of multiple crises.

Directors Deniz Tortum and Serdar Kökçeoğlu, who have made significant contributions to Turkey's experimental documentary cinema with their films in recent years, will present a selection of Harun Farocki's films and installations and explain how they were inspired by the artist's work. The talk will be moderated by writer, editor and translator Hasan Cem Çal.
